MONDAY OF HOLY WEEK: We are in the great week now. The double melody of suffering and triumph which touched us so strongly yesterday is once more audible now. We hear it through out all the days of this week, and always the notes of triumph, the free sounds of peace and glory, master the tones of suffering and complaint. Fundamentally, even in this most serious week of the liturgical year, joy receives the main accent whenever the Church prays or sings. Strong and gentle, this odor streams out of today’s Mass. The alabaster box is broken and nard flows over Jesus’ head and feet; its odor fills the whole house. In this way those who believe in him show Jesus the love they feel; he is the Son of God and Messiah who has awakened one of them from the dead. Judas’ envy takes offense at this gesture. But Jesus is fully conscious of his dignity as Messiah, and he rebukes Judas and accepts the gesture of waste. This show of honor and love is his due. No amount of praise or love can be wasted on him. Every precious or beautiful thing is due to him who has made the cosmos and has come to re-make it.Mary, the lover, without reflecting upon it, does from her love’s instinct the one thing necessary, and this is always in opposition to natural ways of thinking: apparent uselessness, apparent waste. Yet this is the one thing worth doing, the one thing necessary as far as Jesus is concerned. Man can make no other response when God is present to him than to pour out everything he has, to make a total offering of himself and of everything that belongs to him.
