MONDAY AFTER EPIPHANY: Jesus Christ came to establish his kingdom on earth, but we realize that it is not a sovereign, inalienable domination that God exerts on every creature. It is rather the realm of love that his free-willed creatures build for him in their heart by their voluntary submission to him and which gives so very much glory to God. Place before your eyes the image of Jesus Christ who, during the thirty-three years of his life on earth, sought to form his own disciples by the force of his teachings in order to win souls for him through their own example and teaching. Then, represent him to yourself as a completely humble and loving man. Take these characteristics of Jesus and add to them the notion of a great king to whom was given all power in heaven and on earth. In your imagination, hear him invite everyone, and you in particular, to imitate his way of life and his zeal. Listen to him closely. He promises to help you with his grace and to ask of you nothing that he himself has not done first.Finally, hear him assuring anyone who responds to his gentle invitations a hundredfold in this world, especially peace of heart, and a crown of victory in eternity whose shining brilliance will correspond to how closely we have each followed his example on earth. The prince of this world, one formerly chosen by God who now calls on the services of his own subjects, is a sham. The stipulations he exacts and the promises he makes are all impossible.
